Governor Beshear to Kick Off Cancer Screening

Opportunities at State Fair

Louisville, Ky. —The 2014 Kentucky State Fair will begin with a press conference to kick-off  the annual Free Prostate Cancer Screenings in the South Wing Health Horizons area of the fair on August14, 2014 at 9:30am.  Governor Beshear will join the Kentucky Prostate Cancer Coalition, the Kentucky Cancer Program, and KentuckyOne Health to help kick off  the free cancer screening opportunity to attendees in an effort to reduce cancer rates in the Commonwealth.

Joining Governor Steve Beshear will be former Lieutenant Governor Steve Henry, both men are prostate cancer survivors.  Also joining the effort will be the newly appointed Commissioner of Veterans Affairs, Heather French Henry, who has been involved since her tour as Miss America 2000 to offer awareness to Vietnam Veterans about the high risk of prostate cancer due to exposure of Agent Orange.  Kentucky has the highest death rate from cancer of any state in the nation, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.

“We are proud to be able to continue providing free prostate cancer screenings at the Ky State Fair and for the partnerships with the Kentucky Cancer Program, KentuckyOne Health and the Heather French Foundation for Veterans, Inc.” --Stephen Henry, MD.

“With more than 500,000 attendees from across the Commonwealth, the Kentucky State Fair provides us with the opportunity to share potentially life-saving health screenings with more Kentuckians,” said Bev Weber, COO, KentuckyOne Health.

“Roughly 3 million people served in the US military in Vietnam, about 1.5 million of whom served during the period of heaviest herbicide spraying from 1967 to 196,” said Heather French Henry, “This is one of the many reasons why Vietnam Veterans are a high risk group for Prostate Cancer.”
